If you complement your technical savvy with strong leadership and management skills, this position offers you the opportunity to be a true business partner to leaders across our organization and play a key role in plotting the IT future of the National Notary Association (NNA). We get it: investing in technology can help us achieve our goals more efficiently and cost effectively, and if you support the organization's goals, we'll support your efforts to take IT to ever-greater levels. Assuming direction of a strong technical staff, you will provide the leadership and organization to plan, coordinate and manage all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the IT department. To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have at least five years of experience with increasing responsibilities for direct management and support of a multifaceted IT operation. We're looking for a professional with experience researching, recommending and building mission-critical applications and systems in support of organizational goals and objectives. You also will need to be willing to roll up your sleeves from time to time and contribute alongside your staff.

We are committed to our members as well as to our 160 employees, always striving to provide our people with growth and development opportunities.
What Else You'll Bring to the Table
While you will need solid technical knowledge and experience, even more important will be your leadership capacity, management skills, and ability to drive the technical processes that turn great ideas into functional solutions. In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:
A bachelor's degree from a four year college or university, preferably with an emphasis in Information Systems, Computer Science, Business Administration or a related field.
Broad working knowledge of various business technologies ranging from: networking protocols such as LAN, WAN, NOS and/or SAN; security; relational databases such as SQL and/or DB2; web development, business systems; enterprise e-mail systems such as Exchange; operating systems such as Windows, Linux and UNIX; office productivity suites such as Microsoft Office; virtualization products such as VMware; backup systems; telecommunications systems and various computer peripherals such as monitors, printers, modems and scanners.
Comprehensive experience with corporate enterprise IT infrastructure such as business continuity planning; collaboration services and data centers; data communications, data protection, desktop, notebook, handheld and server computer hardware; enterprise servers; IT security and network infrastructure; and PBX and VoIP telecommunications systems.
Thorough knowledge of TCP/IP, T1, T3, MPLS and related connection technologies and standards.
Comprehensive experience with system, application and program design and development processes, including requirements analysis, feasibility studies, software design, programming, testing, installation, evaluation and operational management.
Experience in the design, management and operation of managed IT systems.
Comprehensive experience with the preparation, monitoring and management of an IT operating and capital budget.
The ability to think strategically and execute tactically, and analyze and resolve complex issues, both logical and interpersonal.
Effective verbal and written communication skills and effective presentation skills.
The ability to negotiate and defuse conflict.
Comprehensive experience with negotiating with vendors, contractors and others.
Preferred but not required:
Experience developing, designing and implementing systems such as hardware or workflow.
Experience with AS/400 platforms.
What's in It for You
Strategic partnering, diverse challenges -- IT may be an "island" (or merely a cost center) in some companies, but at NNA you and your staff will be true business partners supporting our strategic goals. We are a unique organization and you'll support a steady stream of intriguing and varied projects, such as optimizing our learning management system, facilitating online marketing campaigns and streamlining accounting processes.
The nation's leader -- none of our competitors even comes close to NNA's size, scope, and influence, including our collection of information and resources. We offer services and products for every stage of a Notary's career, from obtaining an original commission to ongoing education, professional supplies, bonds and insurance, emerging technologies, and more.
Stability through evolution -- we've flourished for over 50 years because we are committed to staying ahead of the curve. Regardless of the economic situation, notarial services are more important than ever (consider the growth of ID theft, mortgage fraud, and other crimes) in protecting the public from fraud and safeguarding transactions.
A value-driven culture -- you'll find a strongly supportive leadership team and a culture that is progressive and open to transformation; in fact, change is a constant in our environment. You also will find some old-fashioned values, like a belief in work-life balance, and an unwavering commitment to the moral and ethical integrity that is fundamental to the Notary Public profession.
Excellent compensation -- in addition to a competitive salary and bonus incentive program, we offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, life, and disability insurance; a 401(k) and other generous retirement plans; 12 paid holidays; and generous paid time off.
More About Your Role
If you're a good fit for this position, you already know most of what this job entails. However, to be sure we're providing a complete picture, here are some details.
Reporting to the Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, you will provide leadership to a team that includes six in-house professionals and a flexible number of external web programmers. The team is divided among networking, telecom, and web development (we host and develop in house). Our proprietary business application runs on an AS/400, however we are largely a Microsoft house, running MS Server 2003, Exchange 2003, and other Windows based applications.
You and your team will support efforts in diverse practice areas, including Educational Services, Membership Services, Corporate Services and Supplies and Insurance. Within each of these departments there are people with great ideas as well as some strong technical savvy. If you're the person we're looking for, it should be clear that we don't need someone to redesign our networks. We need a leader to collaborate with the practice area leaders, develop their ideas and contribute new ones, channel the expertise of the IT team toward these goals, and manage such progress to completion.
Of course the systems, hardware and applications need to be maintained, enhanced, and upgraded as necessary, and you'll see to that. But overall your mission will be to tell us how IT can make our organization better. A few examples of projects on the horizon:
Redesigning the Billing Program to accommodate auto-pay and other best of breed practices suitable for eCommerce.
Web-site redesign.
Improvements to the Learning Management System in support of aggressive goals for online educational content.
Transfer of NNA's intellectual assets from print to digital formats suitable for online subscription-based product line.
Online Marketing campaigns and tools.
Improvements to the architecture/technical design of NNA's member/customer databases to achieve greater accuracy and simplicity.
In each case (and with all ideas and projects) we'll look to you to help think through the goals and process. For example, lots of people can build a Billing Program, but the IT Director we're looking for will clarify the objectives and place the project in the larger context to consider what else is impacted, what the future holds, and what options will best suit our needs.
Keys to Success
Our unique culture is both entrepreneurial and collaborative; while we encourage all to have strong views and be ready to articulate them, you won't find oversized egos at NNA. In addition, in order to be an outstanding Director of IT you will:
Strike the right balance between providing the strategic vision and managing the day-to-day activities of your group. You won't be involved in every daily activity, but members of NNA's management team welcome opportunities to get into those details now and again in order to better understand "where the rubber hits the road."
Possess above average communication skills and strong emotional intelligence, providing clear direction and expectations within IT as well as with other stakeholders.
Remain flexible and adaptive in an organization that is proactive about continuous improvement.
Bring a strong business sense and understanding of how IT can help drive the numbers and enhance ROI.
Present cases, not just ideas; for example, instead of saying, "I've got an idea," you'll say, "I've got an idea and this is how it will work."
If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!
